KFC Has Opened NFL-Themed Restaurants as Part of the League’s Effort to Expand Into Other Markets
KFC 🤝 NFL
There’s still hope that you can celebrate Super Bowl Sunday at the KC-themed KFC…
I would argue love for fried chicken should be universal to anyone who’s ever tasted it, and the NFL seems to agree. According to this week’s NFL news, the league has partnered with Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) to launch NFL-themed restaurants in Mexico.
So far, they have KFCs for the 49ers, Steelers, and Chiefs. They come with their own Big Box meals.
I’ve never thought about going to KFC to watch the Steelers play, but this looks nicer than any KFC I’ve been to in the US.
Granted, when I think of the NFL and KFC collaborating, I think back to the night after Super Bowl LI (Atlanta’s 28-3 collapse) and how I vomited eight times with two of those instances coming out the other end too. To this day, I’m still not sure if it was the KFC or the disgust over what the Falcons allowed to happen, but I haven’t ordered a bucket of extra crispy since.
But that shouldn’t stop others from enjoying what they eat.
NFL Expansion Makes Sense
The move is an obvious attempt to expand the game globally like the NBA, which is a big goal for the NFL with its international game series. Some of those games have even been played in Mexico, and it wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see the league return to Mexico for live NFL games.
However, the main thing they must solve for these international games is making sure the field is up to par.
We saw it again in Brazil in Week 1 this year when the Packers and Eagles played on a poor field that led to some injuries, including Jordan Love in the final seconds. This is a multi-billion-dollar company, so they have to start doing better work with the field maintenance as they play on soccer fields and venues not used for American football games. This affects everything from performance to NFL betting odds to player health and safety.
That has always been my biggest beef with the international games. If they ensure a good playing surface, then they can host a game in Greenland for all I care. They’re in the news a lot lately. It’s not like I’m getting on a plane to watch any of these games. The couch is fine.
Super Bowl Sunday With the Chiefs?
The selection of teams that the KFC deal has already selected is solid too. San Francisco has a diverse fanbase in California with a lot of Hispanic/Latin American fans, so it’s easy to see how they could have a big following in Mexico. Steelers fans simply travel all over the world too. That’s well known.
But the Chiefs are interesting as that franchise hasn’t always been top of the league in stature. Obviously, the success of this dynasty era with the arrival of Patrick Mahomes has made the Chiefs a ratings darling, must-see TV, and greatly improved the value of that team.
The Chiefs are the only team left in the NFL playoff picture with its own KFC, and they are big favorites against Houston this weekend. So, there’s still hope that you can celebrate Super Bowl Sunday at the KC-themed KFC.
Just pray you don’t spend Monday on the toilet.
